Frequently Asked Questions
- How do you pronounce Howduino?
It sounds like "How do we know".
- What is an Arduino?
In simple terms it's a very small computer that you can connect up to sensors, motors or anything else. You then load a program on to it and of it goes. There are lots of different add-ons called Shields, these can add things like network ports or bluetooth capability. All the software that you need is free and designed with non-technical people in mind, the actual boards cost around £20 and can be bought from lots of places online (oomlout, Tinker. It!, Cool Components, SK Pang Electronics and more).
For more information check out the Arduino website, or come along to one of the Arduino talks that will be on in the run up to Howduino.
- Do I need to be a programmer or electronics whizz to come to this?
Not at all! Although someone needs to do some programming to make an Arduino work, there are lots of free scripts you can download or you can join forces with other people there on the day. Perhaps you're really good at textiles and want to make some soft toys that will dance, so team up with someone who can make the motors move, and someone who can program the dance moves. If you've got some ideas post them on the wiki and list what you want help with.
- What will I need to bring?
Bring anything you might want to use, we'll be supplying power and internet, there may be some computers available on the day but best to bring your own if you can.
